In 1961 graphic designer Herbert Spencer brought to light the issues surrounding non-motorway British road signs. Back then finding our way was nothing less than chaotic. The signs were inconsistent, confusing and often difficult to read, leading to frustration and even accidents.

Spencer’s articles prompted the government to form The Worboys Committee who demanded the change of 1,600,000 existing traffic signs throughout the UK.

Around this time, a small typewriter company in Bristol began experimenting with self-adhesive materials and quickly established itself in the sign-making industry, seizing the opportunity to contribute to the Worboys mission of overhauling the UK signage system and becoming a pioneer in the industry, now producing public right-of-way signs for councils nationwide and holding contracts with major utility boards, including UK Power Networks and National Grid.
